Grand old exterior with a bar/club vibe inside. Didn’t visit upstairs.

Now a large bar with a clubby sort of feel, despite being in a rather ornate building. The impressive ceiling is rather spoilt by oversized industrial lighting and some dangly bulbs hung from pipework. A long double row of bar stools at shelves faces the copper-topped bar, with further high tables behind and some lower banquettes extending into a side room. An upstairs is signed but unclear what is there. Two banks of fonts had a selection of craft and European beers, including a rare Bavarian ABK. I had a Purity Longhorn unfiltered IPA at £4.60 which was refreshingly hoppy. No real ale though. Overall fairly pleasant at a quiet lunchtime and could be a lot worse, although what looked like a DJ booth at the end suggested it might be at times.

Now called the Jailbird - New York seafood and steak restaurant.
The bar area is now on the ground floor and they have moved the restaurant upstairs.
