A former coaching inn which enjoyed a 20th Century revival as a backstreet local, now a fairly nondescript town pub. The street outside is littered with fag ends, and given the building site opposite is not attractive. Inside, there are two bar areas. The area closest to the entrance is formed from conjoining earlier small rooms, as evinced by the stepped floor level. It has a dart board, juke box and gaming machines. There was a bucket in the middle of the floor catching the water which was dripping from one of the light sockets. The other area was once a skittle alley but is now laid to table and feels more like a Scout hut than a pub. The landlady was chatty and happy to keep the dogs entertained with chews. The menu was sensible, a mix of pub classics and one or two novelties. We had the tapas, which was actually quite good and reasonably priced. There were 3 pumps on the bar but only one ale, Doombar, which was in below-average condition. OK for a cheap lunch, but probably not the best bet in the town, and the beer quality would put me off coming back.
