Blackthorn _ left this review about The Regency

Located slightly off the main strip of the town centre although nonetheless only a very short distance from it, this is an unusual looking pub with it’s large protruding bay window, and looks a little out of place compared to the rather more elegant houses around it. First impressions weren’t great with three cars squeezed on to the forecourt so tightly it made access very difficult. Certainly anyone in a wheelchair or even of a more rotund stature would have had no chance. The main bar is off to the right, with some sort of function room to the left. Although I didn’t investigate closely, it appeared that there was a ladies darts match in progress on our recent visit.

Once inside the pub is very traditional in style, perhaps somewhat dated even, with red patterned carpet on the floor, rough plasterwork on the walls and dark wood panelling cladding the lower part of the walls. The ceiling had some unusual sculptured style which were a bit too reminiscent of suspended polystyrene for my liking. Seating was mostly blue padded chairs with similarly attired stools at the bar along with some curved cream banquette seating fitted in the bay window. A few old black and white photographs were dotted around the walls, as well as a brewery mirror and some old drink advertisements. Other than that there was little of any note, and it struck me as the sort of place that probably hasn’t changed in decades. It seemed to have something of an edge to it when we were there though, with a few of the locals, who were all old boys and really should know better, seeming to take offence when a non-regular was sat in “their” seat.

Beers on tap were Tribute, Fallen Oak’s Spun Gold, Butcombe Original, London Pride and Timothy Taylor Landlord, whilst a sixth pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Inch’s medium Apple. Overall, certainly not a bad pub and it makes a useful trio with the nearby Black Cat and Fat Head.

Striking red bar window, some outside seating at front and rear. Inside, 7pm on a sunday and I had to battle my way through people singing/dancing to the Smiths. Felt it safer to take my TT Landlord (A championship club member) outside. A mistake, we had to listen to mating rituals of late middle aged somerset folk at an uncomfortable volume. I'll say this for them, they're not shy in asking what they want.

When they left, we had a chat with the friendly bar staff and enjoyed the late evening setting son.

Worthy of its GBG 2024 placement.

Side street local that looks like a hotel/B&B at a glance. Inside feels like it had an expensive refurb in the late 1970s which has been well maintained. A homely and comfy interior over two rooms - lounge to the right and games area to the left. The bay window banquette was the best seat in the house and most of the punters were either sat there or in close proximity, a few barflies excepted. Enclosed bijou and tidy rear patio. Six cask on at the bar, mainly from large regionals - 2x Butcombe, Timothy Taylor Landlord, one I forgot to note and St Austell Anthem (NBSS 3). Used to sell Bass but I was told that it no longer does, shame. Friendly service from behind the bar from a professional young lady. Filled rolls available for £2.50 – mine hit the spot. GBG’23 listed and easily the best all-rounder in W-S-M for my money. If only there’d been Bass…

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Regency

Side-street pub just far enough from the north end of the main seafront to be more of a local than a tourist haunt. From the road, this place looks little different from the numerous small hotels and B&B establishments that abound nearby, but the interior offers a traditional (if refurbished) ambience. It's also in the Good Beer Guide, and five of the six handpumps were in use when I visited. The beers were mostly mainstream, but there was certainly nothing wrong with my pint of St Austell's new Anthem (£4.20).

This looks as though it was once a hotel but is no longer used as one. That may explain the rather plush decor in the bar area.
There is another area to the left which had a TV going with the tedious European Cup and a crowd watching.
Although there are six hand pumps on my visit the beer choice was depressingly mainstream with one unused, Courage Best, Bass, Well's Bombardier, Butcombe Bitter and Quantock White Hind which saved the day (£3.50) and was a good pint in excellent condition. This one is GBG 2016 listed.

Called in this pub as it is in the 2012 Good Beer Guide and found the decor doesn't appear to have changed since the last reviewer was there, but it was a comfy friendly pub serving good beer. Butcombe bitter, Beer Rocks 2012, Wells Bombardier, Everards Tiger and Bass were the beers available and we enjoyed the one from Beer Rocks brewery.
