I'd been told by a mate of mine that the Cricketers vies with Tap Room No. 12 as the best pub in Ormskirk. However, on the basis of this visit, I definitely prefer Tap Room No. 12.
My visit was at 8:45pm on a Sunday evening. My information suggested that the Cricketers normally serves until 10pm. However, the young bar staff didn't seem too happy with my entry that late in the day. I was asked if there was anybody else joining me. Seeing that there were very few others still in the pub, I quickly sensed that they might tell me they had finished serving and informed them that it was just me and I just wanted a half. After that, service came much more readily and the beer I was sold was my favourite beer of the day.
The selection at the bar was Marstons Wainwright Gold, Reedley Hallows New Laund Bitter & RedWillow Doubtless. It was the Doubtless that I ordered and which I found in a very good condition. Keg beers on included Thornbridge Green Mountain, Brooklyn Stonewall IPA & Shipyard American Pale. According to WhatPub, a CAMRA discount is offered. The barman had not heard of CAMRA, but gave me a discount in any case!
The pub is fairly narrow, but stretches back quite a way. There was one other group of 4 and another couple. It looked like all of them had been there for a meal.
Despite my very enjoyable beer, I sense this pub has either gone downhill a little or has moved more towards the gastropub side of things. This would probably explain why it has dropped out of the Good Beer Guide. I'd still recommend it for a swift one though.

Bland is definitely the word for the interior. A sparse, whitewashed bar/restaurant. A few ales on which were a selection of pales and goldens. Lots of the customers were in suits and by the time we left it was completely full of diners. There are other venues serving real ale in Ormskirk in much cosier surrounds so no real reason to return here.

A mix of drinking and dining pub, the right side more a dining area with booths and livery’d staff. To the left a bar with four pulls, Wainwright, Salopian and Mobberley Brewhouse, the fourth was blank. Blandish modern decor with grey woodwork. It’s GBG listed and the beer at least is quite good.

An excellent well run pub, which had a stylish interior that was in keeping with the building. There were three main areas, the bar area immediately on the left as you entered from the front entrance, a lounge area along with a real fire on the right and a good sized conservatory at the rear, mainly used for dining. There was also a decent sized room upstairs used for dining or private parties.
Five handpumps serving Parkway Brewing Co, Windsor & Eton Canberra, Wainwright and two from Moorhouses a Premier and Ship Special. I went for the Moorhouse's Ship Special, which was excellent and the first one didn't touch the sides. The staff very professional and knowledgeable about cask ales.

Very nice place. A modern interior with a bar lounge area at the front and a more dining area to the rear which also has a conservatory. Comfortable and clean. Serves real ale.
