The exterior of Chez Mal has the feel of a restaurant so after climbing the steps to the entrance I wasn’t surprised to find myself in an empty restaurant during a recent late Tuesday afternoon visit. However, I was surprised to find a dedicated bar area with a sunken curved steel topped counter. I commented to the friendly barmaid that I felt like a giant looking down on here behind the jump and shy replied that the bar had been designed so that she was in eyeline with people who were sat at the chairs along the counter. This was a new one on me. Obscure muted football was being aired on the television and some very low background noise could just about be heard. My visit coincided with the midweek happy hour(s), so my pint of Cruzcampo was £4.50 rather than upwards of £7. A couple of other premium lagers were available alongside BrewDog IPA. I must admit that I wasn’t expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised and yes, I would visit again during happy hour for a cheap pint in upmarket surroundings.

And I thought the Street on 1st was expensive. This place was £3.40 for a half of Punk IPA, for Christ's sake!! And the place was full of people paying these prices. Manchester is getting worse then London nowadays.
