Blue Scrumpy left this review about Shepherds' Hall Ale House

Update:

We tried to visit this former micropub on 11/7/26. It has been extended into adjacent purposes and perhaps can no longer be classified as a micropub due to its size. There are many handpulls but none at all were clipped. So, we entered the new premises, passed through the pub and exited through the original doors choosing not to stay for a drink.

I now note on the CAMRA website that the pub is closed until the autumn due to the hot weather, which is perhaps the reason they had no cask ales. Their website seems to have been taken down too. I'll keep my original high rating, but for the foreseeable this place is closed.

Last Visit 3/8/21:

Chorley's first micropub is situated conveniently for the town's bus and rail stations. It's also very close to the market place at the centre.

It is quite a large single room, with a variety of seating. 5 real ales and 2 real ciders are served. These were Theakston Old Peculier, Dancing Duck Dark Drake, Vocation Heart & Soul, Bass, Martland Mill Knocker Upper, Thistly Cross Whisky Cask & SeaCider Strawberry Cider.

Toilets were clean and service was friendly and knowledgeable.

Brainy Pool left this review about Shepherds' Hall Ale House

sprawling oddball Victorian themed bar with two bars and several different areas. The idea is good and the beer is fine over 9 hand pulls. Not convinced it totally works and it needs a bit more attention to detail - feels disjointed and the toilets are pretty basic for such a large venue. Service is a mixed bag, friendly but lethargic. Could be great, as it is it feels like a tearoom converted to a pub on the cheap.

Now called The Shepherds Hall Ale House And Victoria Rooms. This is no longer a micropub. It has been extended into the next door building and has been swallowed up to be part of a music venue. Real ale still available.

Old Boots left this review about Shepherds' Hall Ale House

Corner bar with one small bar labelled “The Taproom” and a larger dining/eating area next door separated by a spine wall although with a hatch affair and rear corridor between them. Five pulls and the usual pub accoutrements in the taproom with a mix of beers from smaller breweries such as Tiny Rebel, Front Row etc. There are some kegs taps in the dining area. A fair bit of Victorian interior remains but there was a bit of an agricultural smell in parts of the taproom.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Shepherds' Hall Ale House

Old-school (if one's horizons are short) micro-pub, with a compact bar area featuring as much furniture as they can fit in during these coronavirus restriction times. The compact bar counter in one corner is home to five handpumps, with a fair selection of beers from smaller breweries, and I went for the Seen Red (£3.40) - one of a pair from Front Row.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Shepherds' Hall Ale House

A decent micro pub this one across from the town centre's church. The pub had a relaxed atmosphere with music played low. The interior consisted of light grey painted walls and sage green painted timber work, which included the original picture rail. The bar also had a painted timber front and a tiled counter top. This micro for its size had ample seating, consisting of upholstered bench seating in the window bay, along with low tables and chairs and six bar stools around the bar. Six ales on handpump, with an average price of £2.90. We went for the Brightside Brewery Odin which was excellent.

One room micro although bigger than some. Bar to right rear. One IPA over 5% ABV, the rest of the six (in total) hand pumps under 4.5% ABV. Not a bad place just over the road from the Ale Station.

Aqualung . left this review about Shepherds' Hall Ale House

This is a micropub that will have been going three years this summer. It's a typical one consisting of a smallish rectangular room with a wooden floor, low tables benches and stools and a few bits of taller furniture at the front. There are some pictures on the walls and the obligatory collection of pump clips.
The small bar counter has five hand pumps which had RAT Mother Rat & Ratmospheric, Phoenix Navvy, Brightside Amarillo and Blackedge Pike. I went for the Mother Rat (£3.00) which was excellent.
This is Chorley's first micropub and a good one. It's a town that now has four and somewhere I would more than happily return to when I would revisit this GBG 2017 listed micropub.
