Strongers . left this review about The White Hart
I walked into the White Hart via the skylight covered beer garden that joins this pub to the Engineer. I was surprised to find the barmaid that had just served me in the Engineer standing in the bar, the staff explained that the two pubs are owned by the same people and that the staff work in both of them. The draught options from the serving counter up the right were the same as the Engineer with Guinness alongside premium and mainstream craft keg and four of the eight hand pumps were drawing Salopian’s Golden Thread, Purity’s Gold, Colbier Brew Co’s Minor and Lilley’s Elderflower. I missed the other four hand pumps, I’ll be sure to note them next time I’m in here. The main between the two pubs is that this is a traditional pub with lots of wooden features, beer shelves and tables and chairs and the other is akin to a bunker. There’s also another bar upstairs with the same keg as downstairs plus a couple of double up hand pumps. Walking out of the pub via its front entrance I noted that there’s lots of steps up to it from the street below. I think I slightly preferred it in here to the Engineer, but they both get an 8/10 so there’s little to choose between even though they are vastly different pubs.

I walked into the pub unaware of the recent refurbishment till later that day when told by a local in another pub, well they've done a top notch job with the result being a very comfortable and authentic feeling pub, probably my favourite of my twenty eight Liverpool pub haul. I was too far into the second day to bother recording all available beers but my Neptune Eliza hit the spot. A great place I look forward to revisiting if I'm ever back this way.

I used to like this place under its previous guises as the Clove Hitch and the Keystone, with the 23 Club downstairs, but if anything, the new owners have done an excellent job of refurbishing the building and there is now a much bigger drinking space.
Whilst the downstairs space no longer appears to be used, the main ground floor room is still used and there is an extra space adjacent to the rear courtyard for further tables. This space then connects the White Hart to the Engineer at the rear. Whilst the two pubs are joined, the Engineer does have its own entrance from Arrad Street.
The Engineer itself is much smaller, but with a ground floor room just to the right of the bar and steps leading up to a balcony above the bar with access to 3 cosy rooms that appeared to be popular with the local student population on our late Monday evening visit.
Back in the White Hart itself, there is a further bar on the first floor. Whilst the White Hart and the Engineer have different ale selections, the first floor bar in the White Hart is just a reduced selection from the ground floor. A friendly, young barman told me that the two rooms up here had previously been offices. As with the whole building, they were both tastefully decorated and make you think that they have been just like this for years.
The cask ale selection does not disappoint. The White Hart has Ossett White Rat as a regular with Ossett Silver King, St Austell Proper Job, Black Lodge Shake Hand, Make Friend, Abbeydale Deception & Timothy Taylor Boltmaker being the guests. In the Engineer section, Timothy Taylor Landlord appears to be the regular beer. Guests there were Carnival Carmen, Chapter Blindfold Off & Titanic Chocolate & Vanilla Stout.
Along with the Vines, the Red Lion and the Queen of Hope Street, this group of pubs are fast becoming firm favourites in Liverpool city centre and we're always happy to find pubs that stay open a little later than normal (they are all open until 00:30, with the Vines open until 1am. However, we did notice that they rang last orders at around 23:45, which wasn't quite as advertised. Luckily this didn't prove to be a problem, as we just headed further along the street to the Queen of Hope Street which was definitely staying open until 00:30.

now taken over by the group behind the Vines, Red Lion and Queen of Hope Street. It has been given a very comprehensive impressive refurbishment making it feel like a classic Victorian pub. All dimly lit with candles, dark wood, antique decor & furnishings, a very warm fireplace. The layout has totally changed downstairs with a new bar made from the back of a church pew. No expense spared here. The upstairs has an extra bar with a couple of rooms done in the same style. Good music playing at a fair volume and beer wise it’s not bad either, 6 real ales of which 2 were local (Carnival and Chapter). A really relaxing and pleasant place, more of this please.

Al Bundy left this review about 23 Hope Street
Has reopened as 23 Hope St and is identical as previous incarnations, layout wise. There is to be real ale apparently available, but not on my visit. The handpulls have remained and the 1st Ales are to be by Chapter.

Closing this weekend (end of April) - what a shame. I really quite liked this incarnation.

Wasn’t expecting much here but it’s actually a very nicely done multi roomed pub with a bit of character to it. It’s good to see a ‘new’ place that is showing some interest in cask - three of the hand pulls were on and the rarely seen Wrexham lager too. I saw some food coming out and it did smell good - apparently the chef started today. I guess the only downside was the fairly loud modern indie music, I think a more traditional approach to sound would fit better here.

Called in the day after Ray. There are two rooms in the main area of the pub, plus a basement bar called No. 23 (not visited). There's a conservatory area and a small walled garden at the rear. As Ray mentioned the staff were very friendly and we ended up talking to them and a regular who was sat at the bar. Also 4 ales on the bar, but a couple were different to the ones listed below. The two we had were in very good nick. We liked it here and will call in again next time we're in this part of town.

Popped in here after the Liverpool Beer Festival at the Wigwam Cathedral, so my beer expectations were on high alert and this small bar certainly ticked a lot of boxes. Firstly the staff were very welcoming and chatty, four decent ales on handpump, which were Neptune Mersey Mild, Chapter Brewery As Lazarus, Brimstage Trappers Hat and First Chop Arc. We were in a group of five people, so managed to try them all, which were all in great condition.
The interior had two rooms, the main bar area, along with a front room with tables and chairs, and a rear patio garden.

Al Bundy left this review about Bread And Butter
Now renamed The Key Stone. Similar to its previous incarnation The Clove Hitch with the same layout inside. A beer garden to the rear and now a few pavement tables on Hope St, from which you can view both cathedrals. Up to 3 cask beers on and a number of craft stuff.
29/7/18:
Now open as Bread And Butter and is very much a restaurant. You can just visit for a drink and they're very much into cocktail nonsensery. They do sell beers and lagers but I couldn't see any taps or pumps on or behind the bar.
10/3/18:
Closed.
11/11/15:
A mainly eating place with two handpumps on the ground bar and a few more downstairs in the Bar23 bit. Lots of bottled beers and a lot of high end strength beers. My mate likes it, I think its crap despite the beer choice.

Old Boots left this review about The Clove Hitch
GBG 2014 listed, upstairs it's a corner of a restaurant with 3 pulls and 1 keg tap plus a fridge of decent bottles. The beer was a bit warm and a bit flat. Downstairs is a cellar bar with the same cask selection and a different keg on the counter plus a further selection of 8 kegs on the wall behind the counter served via the trendy "boil in the bag" method. Seating in the small bar area upstairs is provided by a sofa or bar stools, while downstairs is a bit like a dimly lit refectory. Bar staff upstairs are pretty young women; downstairs it's chaps with the kind of facial hair you expect in these places. There is a sign saying we don't do wine on a girder over the counter downstairs, upstairs is probably different, but Mrs RobCamra needs to know this. Beer garden at rear.
