E TA left this review about The Place
A rather ghastly first-floor drinking and entertainment den in an unattractive 1960s block. There is a small car park at the front, which is shared with the businesses on the ground floor. Entry is up some steep steps onto either a balcony terrace with views over the Pontitz camp opposite, or through a filthy dilapidated staircase that looks like it should be condemned. The bar consists of a single large room with a stage for live acts and a long counter running down one side. It feels drab and depressing when empty, while the intoxicated throng that fill it when it’s busy make it uncomfortable for some people. Food was bottom-end pub grub, the low price reflecting the quality rather than the value. They also offer a Sunday carvery which might be better value, but this wasn’t on during our mid-week visit, obviously. Karaoke and live acts are advertised three days a week during the holiday season, while they close for some weeks during the Winter. No real ale or cider, just a standard range of keg – we noted Carling, Foster’s, Inch’s and Heineken, but there may have been others. We were told there is a pool table, but we didn’t see it. There is absolutely nothing about this establishment that would make me want to come back.
