An unspoilt seventeenth Century village pub, well off the beaten track, which has retained a lot of its character and original features. The car park opposite is gravelled, which makes it a bit hazardous for motorcycles. There are a couple of benches and tables outside, but nothing you could really call a garden. Inside, there are three main areas, two bars and a restaurant. The latter is known as The Smithy, referring to its original role as the village blacksmith’s shop, which was incorporated into the pub in more recent years. Both bars have exposed timbers, tiled floors and stone walls, and each has a stone inglenook with a woodburner. Food is freshly cooked pub standard fare at a fair price. The young barman was welcoming and helpful, and the locals were keen to chat to us once they realised we were human. Ales on were Tribute, Dartmoor and Otter Bitter. There were a couple of kegs on too, but I didn’t note what they were. It takes a bit of finding, and they don’t open at lunchtime during the week, but if you’ve got the time it’s worth a visit.
