Not really a pub in the traditional sense, but a Japanese café/bar on the popular Whiteladies Road strip, the majority of the pub is given over to diners with just some high stools at the bar and in the window being available to drinkers. It’s independently owned by a couple of local guys who were both pleasant and friendly. And one of them clearly has some oriental heritage if you were wondering where the Japanese theme came from.
Décor wise it’s quite modern and contemporary with an attractive slate tiled bar and generally a fairly upmarket look to it, although the cheap wood effect lino on the floor jarred with this somewhat. Elsewhere were some Japanese touches such as paper window blinds, and oriental murals and pictures. A further room was down a few steps at the rear, but this too looked to be geared up for diners. The menu offered a selection of sushi dishes as well as numerous noodle and rice options.
Unfortunately there were no real ales on tap, just keg Gem from Bath Ales and Beerd’s Cubic. The solitary cider was Mortimer’s Orchard, which was well past it’s best. Overall I actually quite liked this, with it’s relaxed vibe and pleasant ambience and I will no doubt return to check out the food. That said, if you’re after something that’s more of a traditional pub, then it won’t be for you.
