Will Larter left this review about The Borrowdale Hotel
This is a smart hotel, even more formal than the Lodore up the road, and the public bar is not publicised. It is reached down a corridor to the right of the reception desk, lined with pictures, maps and old hotel bills. Once reached the bar is unremarkable apart from the unexpected presence of three hand pumps offering Jennings Cumberland Ale and a seasonal special, plus a rebadged Marstons beer, probably EPA, which is called Something Borrowed Ale - a clever pun based on the name of the valley and possibly a hint at the hotel making a suitable wedding venue.
The bar occupies a corner of the extended dining room, but there are tables where drinkers are welcome as long as they don't put their rucksacks where they might trip waiting staff exiting the kitchen (oops, sorry). I wasn't the only non-resident popping in for a drink, and despite the absence of "walkers welcome" signs, I wasn't made to feel at all unwelcome. I still had that slightly awkward feeling that I might have been wearing the wrong clothes, though.
For anyone contemplating a Borrowdale pub crawl, the bus to/from Keswick stops right outside in both directions.
