A superb 17th Century village pub which has been modernised and extended. It's off the beaten track so caters mainly for its locals, though ti does have a feel of affluence rather than inclusivity about it. There are two dining and sitting areas in the newer parts of the building, while the main bar is in what feels like a basement area at the back. The brick bar counter is built in an arc around one corner, and there is a large chimney breast which has been opened on both sides, heating the whole pub very effectively. There is a small but pleasant garden at the rear, and there is a car park at the side. Flagstone floors, plenty of exposed timbers and plenty of rural bric-a-brac around the walls give it a traditional rustic feel. Food is locally sourced and freshly cooked, a la carte and from a specials menu, and they offer B&B. It's a very friendly pub, welcoming visitors and dog-friendly. Ales on were Otter Bitter and Fine Tuned Magic Melody, while the keg range was Carlsberg, Martlet Lager (from the Black Bear Brewery, which is part of the same business), Thatcher's Gold and San Miguel. Sheppey's Cider was also available. Unobtrusive easy listening was just about audible in the background, and the local banter was civilised. Well worth a visit, and I might even be tempted to overnight here.
