Visited 19/02/26. Visited previously 30/03/24.

Cask here was four out of five handpumps dispensing their own beers, namely the Dark (Drink and See the Light), the Hobby Horse (An Easy Winner) a lovely golden bitter, the Bitter (Best Round Here) and the XPort (A Taste of Home). Keg offering was Guinness, Staro, original SB, strawberry & lime Rekorderlig cider, Madri, Carling, Coors and Stella.

An outlet for the Rhymney brewery. Long narrow boarded venue with the bar counter on the left-hand wall mid venue. There are a couple of slightly raised areas in the glass frontage with small tables and bucket style armchairs. There is a lovely open fire on the left-hand wall towards the front, no surprise all the seats taken around it on a cold late afternoon! Otherwise, regular tables and chairs in the front part ahead of the bar counter, then some tall tables with tall, backed chairs opposite the bar counter before some banquette style seating along the right-hand wall in the rear of the venue. There was some work going on in the rear part of the venue on my visit suggesting some layout changes for that rear part. Plenty of TV's that my experience of past visits will be showing live sport, but on my visit showing TV with no sound and no music so just the chatter of patrons of the venue. Proper beer drinkers’ venue, all here on my visit were quaffing the cask beers and shunning the keg crap (excluding Guinness from that observation), in fact most were on the XPort so I was the wimpy one on the Hobby Horse!

GBG pre-emptive stop as it's a Rhymney pub I clocked as I walked by. Fairly bland layout but at these cheap prices I'm not complaining. Of note is the taxidermied stags head and the crowd-pleasing classic rock soundtrack. There are large plate glass windows, mainly used for observing the pretty female students walking past. Classic collection of local codgers;

"How's you doing then?"
"Well, I woke up again today so can't complain!"

Four Rhymney cask plus a guest (of sorts - Brodies). My pint of Hobby Horse was GBG standard (NBSS 3). You’re never going to rave about this one but it’s a tidy pub serving good quality cask at a very accessible price.
