A small micro-pub that probably is rightly in the current GBG for the quality and selection of its real ale but was another micro that I didn’t find that comfortable as a pub going experience and didn’t warm to.
A basic shop conversion with a small downstairs room complemented by an even smaller space up a set of steep stairs, there just wasn’t enough here to give me a warm pub glow, especially as the only seat I could get had me staring at an accessible toilet.
A very good line up of five ales and several interesting keg beers as described by Mr Fastard below and my half of Wilde Childe Primitive Satisfaction Pale Ale was certainly on point. Yes it should be included in any beer crawl of Chesterfield , but our next two ports of call, in the shape of the Chesterfield Arms and Neptune Beer Emporium, reminded us how good a proper pub visit could be, if any was needed.

Sharing some similar observations with BF below, my recollections – i.e. notes – describe this place as resembling a ‘doss house’ and ‘smelly’; I certainly recall the smell.
With six pumps, I went for the Brew York Blonde, price and quality not recorded.
My guess is that I really didn’t like this place.

A shop conversion into a very basic micropub with seating around the front window and opposite the accessible toilet while up some steps is the bar offering on my trip Pentrich Doosra,Verdant Fresh Hop (NBSS 4),Castle Rock Textile,Wilde Child Primitive Satisfaction and Brew York Blonde. The wall mounted sign describing the keg selection included many very strong indie beer options of sours,ghose,stouts,double IPA's in thirds,halves or schooners was more unusual than the cask options.
There was as long climb up some dirty stairs to the normal loos and a strange but not suspicious smell probably trying to mask some plumbing issues.An overflow area and a scruffy kitchen up here didnt seem functional.
The barman was however very well informed about the local pub scene and ale in general while our crawl visit injected some life into proceedings with the two regulars looking bemused by the sudden action.OK ale range but with such strong competion close by ,maybe not a must visit unless you are a big fan of strong indie kegged beers.

A good little micro - 4 cask and a dozen keg all from small producers. The place itself is a fairly basic shop conversion on two levels, with a hazardous set of steps between. Well worth a visit.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Chesterfield Alehouse
Excellent micro-pub with a very compact seating area at the front and an even smaller bar up a short flight of steps. Basic furniture and decor, but this matters not where the emphasis is on friendly conversation and great beer. Talking of the latter, there are six real ales on handpump in a variety of styles and strengths, but on a baking summer's day the Hop Studio Pale (£2.90) was just the job.

I agree with Aqualung, with his 9 rating. This is a very well run micropub with an excellent choice of beers, the owner was friendly and chatty, along with like minded drinkers. Six ales on handpump, with three dark beers on the right and three pale on the left. I enjoyed a couple of pints of Great Heck, whilst Mrs A went for North Yorkshire Temptation. A tray of locally made pork pies where delivered, whilst we stood in the bar area, which were soon snapped up at £2 each. This micro is worthy of the status as a destination pub, when visiting Chesterfield.

As described below this is a split level micropub with the bar area up several steps where there is no seating at all. A door on the left leads to an upstairs room where the impending Eurobore competition was being advertised to be shown on a big screen. They're welcome to that.
A cider festival had taken place over the Bank Holiday weekend and there was a large list of ciders left from that including an 8.4% one. I asked the friendly owner how much that one would set me back and was surprised to hear that they were all a blanket price of £3.30 (I think). I was tempted but decided that having one would severely hamper progress so tried the beers instead. The six available were Shiny Abyss Mild, Glastonbury Mystery Tour, Allendale GFPA, Bad Seed Cascade, Arbor Brewtown Mild and Muirhouse Chocolate Mild. I tried the Abyss (£3.00), GFPA (£3.00) and the Cascade (£3.20) all of which were in excellent condition. I really liked this place.

A split level micropub, just outside Chesterfield town centre. As you enter there are just 3 tables with chairs and steps up to the bar which is facing you. Some basic alehouse style decoration on the walls and several posters advertising upcoming events in the town and surrounding area. Six handpumps on the bar alongside both real cider & perry. The ales are listed on a blackboard at the bottom of the steps. I had a pint and a half in here and both were in excellent condition. The barman was playing some music quietly from a radio behind the bar, but apart from that it's conversation only. Pies are available alongside pork scratchings and cheese, but no hot food. A very pleasant stop off and we'll happily visit again next time we're in Chesterfield.

The Chesterfield Alehouse is a micro pub that is situated in the middle of a row of shops,so easily missed like i did.
Once inside there is a small lower area which had normal tables and chairs,the bar is up a few steep steps,this area is even smaller,there were five or six pumps on the bar,i had a drink of Buffys Norweigen Blue which was a very nice well kept beer,the other beers i noted were Blue Monkey Ape Ale,Amber Ales Chocolate Orange and Navigation Artic Blast.
The toilets are up some more very steep steps,there is another room up here,i dont like drinking in rooms away from the bar,but it may suit some people.
This is a pleasant enough micro pub and also very handy for the Red Arrow bus back to Nottingham.
The pub could do with an hanging sign or A board outside,because it can be easily missed,i only found it after walking passed three pubs on chatsworth road,then walking back to try and find it.

A micro-pub, and Chesterfield's first such, so a visit was called for. I'm glad I did because there was a fantastic selection of local ales available. This is a pretty basic shop conversion, and the initial impression is that it's pretty much still a shop, albeit one where the customers' goods are presented in glasses, and are to be consumed on the premises. The bar itself is up a short flight of quite steep and, given their recent installation, rather creaky steps. (There's a wheelchair-access toilet just to the left before you reach them.) A double bank of three hand pumps then greets the eye, and on my visit there were two from Kelham Island, one each from Brampton (just down the road), Bradfield, Ashover and a wheat beer from Fox, a pub brewery in Norfolk. So that's five out of six local ales (Derbyshire and South Yorkshire). Beers are also listed on a blackboard before reaching the upper level, with notes about beer style and the haziness or otherwise of the wheat beer. I had the Ashover Coffin Lane Stout and the Fox Grizzly Bear - both started off a little too cold (it was a cold day), but improved with being left for a few minutes.
Furniture consists of basic tables, benches and chairs in the front part of the shop, but there's also another room upstairs which is more comfortably furnished, the only downside being that it requires climbing a steep and narrow staircase (which also leads to the toilets for those not using wheelchairs).
The barman was friendly and was happy to talk knowledgeably and enthusiastically about the beers, and, a big plus for me, there was no music. On the down side, it's not very much like a pub, but then to be fair it had only been open two weeks at the time of my visit, so probably needs a bit of time to develop some character. If nothing else, a useful staging post between the station and the pubs on the Brampton Mile, or vice versa, so I'd be surprised if this turned out to be my one and only visit.
