Formerly a British Legion club, this is now a regular pub but has, I suspect, changed not at all from it’s club days. It certainly has very much the look and feel of a private member’s club, even though it no longer is.
It’s all one big, open room, although some partitioning in one corner does create a separate lounge area. To one side of the room is an open skittle alley, and a game was in progress on a recent Friday evening visit. Besides that there is also a table skittles game, a couple of pool tables at the front and a darts board in addition to three or four fruit machines, a piano and a juke box, so there should be something to keep most people occupied. A plasma was suspended from the ceiling next to the skittle alley, but nobody seemed to be taking much notice of whatever was showing.
Décor wise, it’s fairly unremarkable and rather dated with a cream and pale brown colour scheme, wood laminate flooring in the centre of the room and a couple of different shades of tatty carpet around the perimeter. Oh yes, and a suspended, tiled ceiling like you might get in an office. A Formica topped bar counter was in one corner and there were a couple of very old and battered black leather sofa’s in another.
Despite a promising four hand pumps on the counter, only one was in use dispensing Butcombe. Ciders fared better with Strongbow, Blackthorn and Thatcher’s Gold.
