Formerly a butcher and fishmonger dating from the 1920s, the business morphed into a bar/diner, still using local produce, in 2012. The building has retained its former character as evinced by the impressive original tiles on the facia and some of the internal walls, though it is obvious where new ones have been fixed to match. The floors are wooden, again, some are original. Part of the front is masked by a low fence which demarks an outside seating area, and a patio heater adds to the confusion. Free WiFi is available, but that is the limit of electronic distraction. The staff are pleasant and welcoming, the locals are a good cross-section of the local community and the atmosphere is that of a busy town local. Food is very good value for money. There were 4 ales on draft and a fair selection of wine I experimented with a pint of Piddle’s Bursting Cherries, an unusual beer which was in perfect condition, though it wouldn’t be my first choice in future given the other beers available. An excellent pub which is well worth seeking out and would make a useful addition to a crawl.
