The pub on our day’s hit-list that had us shuddering the most beforehand – an Irish estate pub in a less-than-alluring flat roofed 60's building, with dubious characters hanging round in the car park opposite. Expected no ale and Desmond kept the motor running but in fact I was surprised to see a solitary Doom Bar on, so in we both went after some cajoling from the (presumed) landlady who was quite friendly (and, I imagine, fierce when she puts her mind to it). Two roomed place, main bar to the right with quizzer and all the drinkers. A pool and function room off to the left but were deserted. The inside looks to have been tarted-up a bit and whilst pretty uninspiring décor-wise was at least clean and tidy. The old cloth-eared boy behind the bar was tortoise-like in service, the locals must obviously be a patient lot in here. The resultant Doom Bar was pretty average but at least better than some of the other grot I sampled round Slough’s satellite conurbations that day (Merrymakers, Toby Carvery, Chestnuts – stand up!). The locals clearly thought we were oddest thing they’d seen in their pub for many a day but didn’t openly pass comment as we rinsed a few quid from the quizzer. So generally it was less fearsome than it looked and was certainly nowhere near the dodgiest of the day. And it gets quite a long review as well. Odd how things sometimes turn out…
