Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Bootlegger
Large subterranean bar and music venue accessed via an alleyway off Fore Street. There are signs indicating that the bar is open at the end of the alleyway and the music is piped out to the end of the alley too.
You descend the stairs and find yourself in the largest of the rooms furnished with multiple sofas and a few high tables. Halfway along the left-hand wall is a piano with a stuffed boar's head above it. Beyond that is the bar itself.
A corridor on the right-hand side leads to the Moonshine Room, which is a little smaller than the original room, but has a stage for live music. A third small room can be found between the two rooms off the corridor.
Loud music was being played throughout the duration of my visit, starting with jazz but moving more to rock 'n' roll by the time I left. I suspect that this venue has only just re-opened following a closure. A few locals were looking in from the surface when I arrived, but they were scouting it out for a potential future visit. As such, when I arrived initially, I was the only customer with just the barman for company. Two or three other customers arrived just before I was getting up to leave.
There are no cask ales here. Keg beers were Bays Devon Cove Pale Ale & Meantime Anytime IPA. Ciders were both from Cornish Orchards - Golden and Raspberry & Elderflower Cider.
This is not really a place to come to for the beers, but if you are into music, it's probably worth your while.
