A previous reviewer comments “The bar is only open Monday to Friday, which can lead to a restricted ale choice if drinking in here on a Friday evening.”
Well let me assure you this place suffers from restrictive ale choice any evening of the week if my recent Wednesday and Thursday evening visits are anything to go by.
Four people last night working the square serving area which fronts the back aluminium wall festooned with all the beer taps, but it was all they could do to keep up with serving those waiting and rescuing glasses so that they had something to put beer in. Consequently there was no effort being made to replace the barrels as they run out and by 8.00PM late night there was only ales at 3% or above 6% on unless you wanted craft lagers, forcing a move on earlier than anticipated.
Well described by previous reviewers, this is a soul less place with terrible acoustics that hanging a canoe from the ceiling can’t really impart any character into, and frankly wouldn’t get a second look if it wasn’t for the fact that Dowgate Hill outside is largely a pedestrianized thoroughfare allowing a decent alfresco space and the beers are very good and reasonably priced as mentioned below.
Included in the real ale offerings last night were Adnams Old Ale and Trinity and Fellowship from the Redemption Brewery and all were well kept.
A good use of train archway space and worth popping in to see what is on if passing but not a Craft Ale destination venue like some of the other recent additions to the London drinking scene IMHO.

A plain in fact stark exterior and interior but as they say I'm only here for the beer. 20 taps set in the wall serve real ale and "craft keg". Handy for cannon street station.

A glass frontage with a neon sign doesn't bode well, but if you descend the two steep steps you will be greeted by a craft beer bar from the same stable as the Euston Tap and Holborn Whippet.Past a couple of side alcoves ,the space opens out underneath an arch of Cannon Street station. The decor is basic, with a few breakfast bar high tables ,two high seater benches and a collection of bar stools to pertch on.The three sided bar is at the rear with the trademark taps set in the wall, six for real ale and fourteen for keg beer, continental lager and cider. There was some muzak but this was drowned out by chatter reverberating around the arch. There is a canoe suspended from the ceiling and I spotted a small deers' head ontop of a mirror, which are all branded with the Pelt Trader name.
As previously noted the distressed metal behind the taps and down to the drip tray just looks an unhygenic mess while there was only a choice of three ales after a Magic Rock brew went as I was waiting to get served one Friday lunchtime. However my Buxton American Rye was in very good condition and at £3.40 pretty reasonable for the area. The other ales on offer were Buxton Gold and Adnams Topaz. The website gives an up to date what's on tap list.Among the craft keg beers I spotted Magic Rock Hire Wire but resisted the temptation at £5,while there was also a raspberry beer and a Camden offering. The focus here is on draught,I did not spot any bottles for sale.
There are four variety of pizzas and three "Mountain Meats" dishes containing hog and venison chorizo and salami to maintain the rugged theme. The bar is only open Monday to Friday, which can lead to a restricted ale choice if drinking in here on a Friday evening.
I will use this place again on the basis that you might well find a very good real ale without being ripped off,but overall it is only a lite version of the Euston Tap.

Bar in a railway arch. Stark white painted cave. Terrible acoustic meant the barman had trouble hearing our order.20 taps with 6 real ales. Same dispense as the Holborn Whippet( presumably) with what looks to me like a urinal trough to catch the drips. Very reasonable prices for the area and the beers I tried were in good condition. Bin Laden would feel at home here but it was opening night so may be they need to add more furnishings to give it a better feel. Will call again.
