Estate pub can mean two things, and this is very much the other one. The village is all part of the country estate of the Sykes family in the nearby 'big house' and it as all very smart and tidy. The pub itself is more of a restaurant than pub but retains a little snug area near the bar, with the most part given over to tables for diners. It is very much in a country house style, complete with antiques, stags' heads, panelling and prints and feels exceptionally well looked after. Three cask ales were on offer - TT Landlord, Wold Top Bitter and Theakston's Best and that sampled was in fine condition. The food is also very good indeed, obviously not cheap but also not at celebrity chef prices, while service is pleasant and efficient. And it retains its pub credentials by not even contemplating slapping a service charge on the bill. Obviously not somewhere for a night out with the lads, but strongly recommended for a nice meal and good ale in top end surroundings. Note it doesn't stay open all day.
