The Black Horse is a Greene King pub with a counter across the rear wall that supports standard and premium keg alongside four hand pumps, two were in operation drawing IPA and Yardbird, the Old Speckled Hen was off and the last pump was supporting a ‘who are Greene King’ sign that invites people to use the QR code for more information… no thanks. To the right of the pub is some open plan seating and there’s some split-level seating with a pool table in the left front. Two dartboards hang on the left-hand wall towards the rear and televisions are found throughout for airing the advertised Sky Sports. There’s a second much smaller bar with three keg options and a couple of high tables in the right rear corner where access can be gained to a steep split-level patio garden out the back. This is a popular pub with people of mixed ages, but it does feel like a high street boozer.

Large sports-oriented bar popular with students. The interior is divided into various sections, with lots of sports TVs around. Note a distinction between the soccer and rugby ends of the pub. Draught ales on offer were IPA, Abbot, Exeter Avocet and Otter.

Loud and noisy GK outlet for students, locals and a few bedraggled fans who were back from the game. If you are able to get past that then you can find some character - aged dark varnish wood and leaded lattice windows but it’s now open-plan and you get the feeling that 25+ years it ago it possessed considerably more charm. Three ales on, GK IPA, Doom Bar and a decent drop of TT Landlord. Decent enough without scaling any heights. 5.5
