There seems to have been a recent makeover here, with modern chunky pine tables, chairs and benches and the feel of a gastro-pub about the décor. This is one of the quieter Peak District villages, a bit off the beaten track as far as tourist trade is concerned. As with most country pubs these days the emphasis is on food, but at the time of my visit no food was available (temporarily) so it was dead quiet.
There are four hand pumps on the bar, serving Timothy Taylor Landlord, Fullers London Pride, Adnams Ghost Ship and Peakstones Rock Pugins Gold. The latter is a celebration brew marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of the architect Augustus Pugin. No, I'd never heard of him before either. I had a half to satisfy my curiosity, and it was in good condition but not something I would want to come back to.
Despite the emphasis on food there are numerous stools at the bar for drinkers, so I would imagine that a few locals use the pub in the evenings. The stone fireplace and solid fuel stove would make it comfortable in cold winter nights, but I can't see myself making the effort to return here even for that.
