A former coaching inn, now the only pub remaining in this large working village. On arrival we were warmly greeted by the barmaid, and the landlady was pleased to see us although a bit inflexible. The locals were friendly and happy to chat as well a give us advice as to routes out to avoid roadworks. There is a main bar at the front, which now has a laminate wooden floor, an inglenook with a modern woodburner, a couple of tables for dining and some leather sofas. There is a massive TV screen in one corner and a dartboard in another, plus a selection of board games. No bar stools, but they were happy for us to stand and drink. At the rear is a smaller snug bar with a second big TV, a piano and more leather sofas. There is also a separate restaurant room at the back, but we didn’t look in there. The stereo was belting out 1960s pop music. There is very limited parking at the front, and there is a large secluded garden behind the pub. It feels more homely than quaint and is very much a community pub rather than a tourist facility. Ales on were Sharp’s Coaster, Dartmoor Legend and Otter Bitter, all in very good condition, plus there was a dry pump. The keg array was Cruzcampo, Peroni, Thatcher’s Gold and Madri plus a couple of others I forgot to note. I quite liked it here and would be happy to come back.
