Will Larter left this review about Marine Bar @ Marine Hotel

I was in Mallaig for a trip to Knoydart with some CAMRA members - branch officials of the Highlands & Western Islands - for a visit to the Old Forge. My train back to civilisation was due to leave the station just around the corner from here at 4pm, and the ferry left the pier at Inverie at 3pm, for what is billed as a 30 to 45 minute crossing. I went from worrying about headwinds to wondering what to drink in the Marine Bar as the boat docked just before 3:30. There's no real ale, so I perused the single malt offerings and spotted an Aberlour 12 year old. This set me back £4.80 but it was worth it to confirm that this bar is definitely open, having been marked as closed for refurbishment in December 2023 and not marked as open until September 2025. They've done a smart job, with bright wood and dark window frames. Inside there are some slogans on the walls: "make mine a double" and "nae drama just drams" and a pool table towards the rear. A couple of iconic symbols either side of the front doors: a Tennents “T” on the outside, and a Shell petrol pump "shell" on the inside.

Part of the Marine Hotel, this is a down to earth locals' bar and, as the most pub-like pub in town, is my personal favourite. It's also the closest one to Mallaig ferry terminal and the collection of foreign bank notes on the gantry behind the bar suggests a lot of overseas tourists have passed through on their way to the islands. After a few pints here, I managed to go into the wrong toilet, due to the doors being confusingly labelled “Laddies” and “Lassies.” Prices are reasonable, with Tennent's lager selling at £3.10 and Caledonia Best, Guinness, Magner's cider and Heverlee lager also on draught.
