A small hotel with two bars open to non-residents. There is no parking and no garden. The hotel overlooks the market square in the centre of this small town, built on a slope which creates a ground floor at the front and a basement level behind, the latter containing the cellar bar. The upstairs bar is the one most usually open, while the larger cellar bar opens now only for functions and skittles matches; there is a skittle alley downstairs. The upstairs ‘lounge’ bar is small and L-shaped, and has tables and chairs, no bar stools. It’s functional rather than cosy, certainly not elegant. The young barman was friendly enough, and we got the feeling he was part of the owner’s family. Two ales on draught, Exeter Avocet and Dartmoor Jail Ale, both in good condition. There was a limited keg range of Otter Pale, Thatcher’s Gold and Budvar. This isn’t really a drinkers’ pub, and given the restricted opening hours it’s worth checking before making a special visit. That said it’s probably a reasonable place to stay, and there are other pubs in the town if you wanted a drink when the bar is closed.
