This is the RAW brewery tap, which is a surprise as only one of the twelve beers on the handpumps was from RAW. All one room but with a raised area that was being used for dining on our visit. Some high tables near the bar and quite a few barstools. It's very bright and airy, with lots of light wood, this definitely appealed to MS CAMRA, if less so to me. It is however a very well kept pub. Both our drinks were in very good nick as well. A friendly and knowledgeable barmaid topped off the attractions. We'll be calling in again next time we're in Chesterfield.

Reopened in July under the banner of local RAW brewery, after having been a Chinese restaurant for many years - what a refreshing change! During the refurbishment some of the original stained glass panels were discovered intact, but of course the interior of the old building had been completely gutted. The new pub therefore has a modern feel to it, but the second refreshing change is on the bar: 12 hand pumps, of which only two were serving RAW beers on my visit, a surprisingly understated presence. Of the non-RAW, all but one were from micros, some but by no means a majority local, and the notable exception was Green King Abbot. I won't attempt to list them here, but will just mention that I had Dark Star Saison (after the barmaid had very solicitously ensured that I knew what to expect from this beer style), Elland Maximum Darkness and Bridestones Indian Head. All were in excellent condition and well served. Prices were around £2.80 a pint. A most welcome addition to the Chesterfield real ale scene, this one really gives nearby pubs like the Rutland some strong competition, which has got to be a good thing.
