A traditional and attractive looking stone built country pub with plenty of colourful foliage adorning the exterior, it certainly looked enticing, and we called in here on spec when passing by recently.
Internally it’s clearly been renovated at some point, and whilst it has kept many of the traditional ingredients such as sections of exposed stone walling, black beams on the ceiling and a flagstone floor, it somehow seemed to lack much in the way of any real character. It’s arranged in an L-shape with the bar counter in front of you as you walk in, with a seating area off to the right that included an old stone fireplace with a large TV mounted above it, a darts board off to one side and a copper skillet on the other. A room at the rear through a stone archway was perhaps more geared up for dining, and a large illuminated wine ‘fridge in a recess next to the arch looked rather out of place. The bar counter was clad with very pale green wood panelling, and there was a further stone fireplace and wood burning stove off to the left. A shelf to the right of the fireplace contained a couple of wooden pig like characters which looked very odd, whilst a plastic crate of rubbish was stacked on top a pile of logs to the left. It all seemed a bit weird.
Unfortunately, there were no real ales on tap. Despite three hand pumps on the bar, two appeared unused whilst the third had a reversed Butcombe clip. The scantily clad barmaid did not elaborate on the reason for this but did offer me a couple of bottles from the ‘fridge. I noticed that they also had Sharp’s Atlantic on keg. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Lilley’s Pineapple. Overall, I’d say give this one a miss and go to the infinitely better Tucker’s Grave just down the road.

A nice country pub off the beaten track but only a short drive from Bath. Impressive food menu and a decent selection of ales including brews from the local "Devilfish Brewery". 8/10
