Wonderful old stone built exterior – it can’t really be some sort of incredible undiscovered heritage pub can it? Of course not, although whilst the interior doesn't live up to the homely promise there's some character. The small old original building opens-out to a startlingly large trussed beamed hangar rear area dominated by a pool table in the centre and TV sport. There's three sets of semi-circular banquettes behind which is a wall-mounted Perspex-fronted display of aged Welsh language stuff. Whitewashed stone walls and slate flooring give it some form of rusticity. Further on is a sizeable rear garden area. Look out for the comedy Das Boot style bogs. Clientele mainly stereotypical loud blokes alongside a couple of equally loud lasses. No cask and little of interest on keg, so half a Guinness as the default option, which was fine. WhatPub says Doctor Johnson stayed here in 1774, I wonder what his ghost would make of the place now?

As previously described a splendid old building on the outside, inside the front room is the original building and although messed about isn’t bad, slate floor, beamed ceiling, big open fire. Behind is an extension that isn’t well done, the counter is to the right in this part, due to covid it’s all screened in on a semi permanent basis. A few screens and a jukebox intrude. Some old outhouses have been converted into toilets and incorporated into the rear extension. When the barman got off his arse the choice wasn’t great, a pump with a Wainwright clip offered a dodgy chance but for better or worse it wasn’t on, no joy with the bottles either so Stella it was.

This would appear to be a very old building, but on entering it has been knocked through into one large room with a dominant pool table and the redeeming feature of a real fire. On the bar there was a single pump with Hancock's HB so I asked the landlord if there were any other real ales and he replied "bottles of Doom Bore or Newcastle Brown". At this point I remembered that my train was leaving soon and left.
