A four square pub standing beside the busy Mansfield Road. Entry is through a porch with a choice of rooms either side of the central bar. There were three hand pumps, but despite the presence of pump clips for three of the Thwaites core range, there was only their seasonal called Mellor Mango. It's named after the river that flows past their new brewery, and the mango flavour comes from hops, apparently. I swerved that and went for the Thwaites Smooth 3.4% which was as poor as they come, cold and uninspiring; a bargain at £4 a pint, but luckily I only had a half.

It was very quiet here mid-Friday afternoon, and the woman working behind the bar was devoid of enthusiasm, and who could blame her. Maybe it's busier on Wednesdays (quiz night) or Thursdays (bike night - no, they mean motor bikes), but anyone whose hopes were raised by mention on the signs outside of live sport on TV will be disappointed once they find as little evidence for such as I saw when here; ditto pool table. There's a darts board.
