Initial feeling on entering was that this was in fact The Slaughtered Lamb - strange looks when we came in, lots of elderly locals hogging the bar, and very sparse decor. Once we'd been in a while, though, things settled down and it actually became quite convivial. There is a small amount of parking on the brick pavement at the front, though this is quite battered and helps to reinforce the image of a remote village pub which has been bypassed by the ages. There is a main bar which has a mix of tiled and worn carpeted flooring, and a woodburner. The servery hatch appeared permanently up, so there was very little bar space, and that was taken up by the landlord and one other customer so didn't feel welcoming. There is also a side bar served by the same counter, which has a dartboard and tables. The pub has active darts, dominoes, pool and shove ha'penny teams, and they run regular card pools. Food is basic pub grub, unpretentious and well-cooked cooked by an ex-Army chef who, it transpired, was a motorcycle enthusiast and consequently spent time chatting with us, all of which helped us settle into what became an enjoyable visit. Only one ale on, Butcombe Original, which was in very good condition. Worth a visit if passing, though opening times are limited, probably due to the advanced age of the landlord.
