After my disastrous visits to two of the pubs in the market area in the centre of town (Kings Arms and Royal Oak) this was a pleasant change. It's a Robinson's pub with off-white paint on the walls. Once inside the change was only subtle, to light green walls which seemed to complement the plain stone fireplaces. The interior has been opened out, but with a natural feel to the resulting space. This was clearly a pub, and not a youth club (Kings) or a restaurant (Oak). As my notes made at the time said, "nice pub". I got a pleasant welcome from behind the bar, and the beer was fine (NBSS 3.5); I may occasionally pull a face when it's Unicorn but this was good.

Tetley Bitter, Copper Dragon Best, & 1816. Scatter of tables & barstools around bar, across an open corridor to two separate small carpetted, fairly unremarkable rooms, albeit both with victorian style fireplaces and one with pool table (covered on Mon). Exterior rather more impressive, architecturally, than the inner, but a jovial welcome at the bar, and the beer is good, also good location near church and indoor market.
