No. 1 Bar and Bistro is the bar of the Queens Hotel and it was quiet when I visit on Wednesday evening. The three TVs were showing muted Champions League football via ITV and there was some lounge music playing in the background. Everyone in the bar was watching the football but pleas to turn the music off and sound up were ignored as none off the three staff had the authority. The bar has a contemporary feel and is clean and tidy which is why I was surprised at the shabby looking sofas in the bar area by the entrance. There are no hand pumps and the draught range is hardly inspiring with Stella (£2.10 for a half), Becks Vier, Boddingtons and Surger Guinness being the choices.

The staff were all very friendly and engaged in conversation with their customers so maybe the management should have a little more trust in them to do the customers bidding. If not maybe there should be a manager in the bar at all times. This place is OK for a hotel bar, but I’m not sure why anyone living locally would choose this place over any of the far superior pubs of the area.
