The Millers Arms is the only pub in Ynystawe. There is a bar to the front and a restaurant area to the rear with a popular garden beyond that. Most tables in both the bar and the restaurant had reserved signs on them with all tables made out for dining, featuring the main menu and a specials menu. Indeed, when the barmaid arrived to serve us, the first thing she asked was if we had reserved with the assumption that we were there to eat. She invited us to occupy any table we could find that was not reserved. There were very few, which probably explained why the garden was so popular and the bar/restaurant were practically empty.
One of the few tables occupied had 4 on it. As we were waiting to be served, I noticed the one guy leaning back on his chair quite dangerously. He obviously didn't pay heed at school to his teachers saying how dangerous it was to swing on a chair, as within seconds he was flat on his back on the floor, nearly banging his head on a stool at the bar which I moved out of the way just in time! Other people at his table didn't seem too surprised at this turn of events!
The pub is bare boarded throughout. The food servery can be found to the rear of the bar where there was a dartboard behind what looked like a trolley used for carveries. Seemed like a strange place to have a game of darts. Music was playing throughout our visit. There was also a games machine. Some old pictures of the pub could be found on the walls, whilst live music and a quiz night were promoted. Children are allowed in. There is a car park hidden away to the rear, accessed by a lane a little further up the main road. The lane appears to lead to a primary school and a park, but the car park is hidden away on the left-hand side.
At the bar, Glamorgan Welsh Pale Ale is the regular beer. Bass was a guest beer with the third handpull unclipped. Tiny Rebel Clwb Tropica could be found on keg. Pumpclips behind the bar show that they have had a few more interesting beers in the past. Ciders were Aspall's & Thatcher's Haze.
Seems like a local pub popular with both drinkers and diners. Although one of my pet hates when walking into a pub is being asked if I have reserved. It immediately puts a dampener on the experience and highlights that diners are prioritised over drinkers in the establishment.
