Bucking Fastard left this review about Saloon
A multi purpose establishment open from 7am,with meals throughout the day,a trendy bar at night with an upstairs lounge/saloon for hire or with VIP areas together with hotel rooms in the floors above accessable via their own seperate side entrance.
Converted from a shop, the nearly full length front windows give a clear view of the open plan ground floor. At the front there are a few dining tables and sofas with arty wall paper and modern light fittings. At the rear left hand side is a lenghty bar with an open space in front for vertical drinking and two huge black leather banquettes opposite, while beyond the lavs there is a small decking area outside, good for a tab.
I was in for a lunch ,and although the menu was cheaply priced (mains £6-£10 generally),the quality was canteen level with slow service. The wooden floor and minimalist decor also magnified the noise of the many children that were present, this is unlikely to be the case at night when DJs operate using large wall mounted speakers.
The modern bar was awash with keg beers, ciders and lager from very shiny fonts and real ale was noteable by it's absence.£4.40 for a pint of Peroni made the happy hour discount (5pm-7pm) almost a necessity if staying for any more than a quick one,and even that would be unlikely to tempt me across the threshold. There is a market for these type of bars in the lively night time economy of Hertford, but you need to be a certain (uncaring ) age to appreciate what's on offer.
