A stone building dating from, it is thought, the Victorian period but on the site of a previous inn from the late 17th Century, once a hotel, now a town pub. There is little room at the back now, and most of that was covered with a large marquee, used as a function room. The pub still does B&B, so still retains the role of hotel. The single bar is small and irregular in shape, homely and comfortable, but feeling more like a town local than a hotel bar, having exposed timbers, gaming machines and a small TV screen which was turned off. There are food theme nights – pies on Tuesday, carvery Wednesdays, steak Thursday and fish Fridays. There are also happy hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Dominoes and drafts are available. We found the locals a bit stand-offish, but the landlord and landlady were friendly and amenable. Three ales on, Butcombes Gold, Dooombar and Tribute, all in reasonable condition. A decent place to come for a few beers or a cheap meal.
