Wasn’t thinking I’d see much in here, assumed it’d be some sort of modern place – it isn’t though. Haphazard internal layout, fairly trad in feel though the décor was a bit glum and naff in places. What I assume to be the old coaching alleyway has been brought into the fabric pub and has a skylight. Huge comedy baronial door like something out of an episode of Knightmare. Nonetheless there were three cask on, though sadly my choice of Dancing Duck was more snoozing quack (NBSS 2 - maybe I had the end of the barrel given the pour before mine was apparently GBG standard?). There was something to the place though – with a bit of effort it would appeal. 5.5

When our pub research trip team leader added this one to our schedule I was a little surprised as I'd not only never been here, I had to admit I'd never even heard of it. It's tucked away in a small alleyway or courtyard beside the market, so I must have been within a few yards of it. There's a modern portico but taking a step back - mind the whelk stall! - it's possible to see that there's a much older building behind the facade. Once inside we congratulated ourselves on having caught up with what remained of our group, two having left to look for the railway station. Finding our way to the bar, we were happy enough with a choice between Landlord, Pedigree and Dancing Duck. I went for the DCUK 4.3% (not a spelling mistake) which was pretty good (NBSS 3.5, £4.40/pint). One to include when doing a selection of city centre pubs, if only to check your navigational skills are still functioning.

I found this to be rather a strange place. There was a DJ playing some great Northern Soul classics and the dance floor was full of blokes dancing around. I thought that I'd been transported back to Wigan in the 70's. It was very full on my Saturday night visit so I didn't get to see much of the interior. There were 2 hand pulled beers available Bass and Timothy Taylors Landlord. The Bass was an OK pint but was expensive at £3.40. Everyone seemed friendly enough and it was interesting to see a time warp in action.

A real pub not a plastic palace, run by people who know what they are doing. Always a good pint and tasty food in a warm atmosphere

Funny how things never change the review previously still holds good today, however I do find it a friendly and welcoming place when I am in this part of town on a saturday afternoon.

Well what can one say about this place! If you're out for a bit of 'heritage action' on a Fri/Sat night then this is the place for you! When I say heritage, I talk of the 'women' in there!!
