A roadside pub in a large stone building set into a hill by a busy road junction. The carpark is up the hill behind the pub, and there is a terraced, paved garden which is only really used by smokers as it's noisy and not terribly attractive. Entering through the back door, which is down a set of stairs, feels like going into a Ugandan dungeon, and there is a lot of litter in the stairwell. Inside, there is a large restaurant/function room in the basement at the back, and a much nicer, more atmospheric bar at the front. The front bar has wooden floorboards, fake beams and an original large fireplace which has been sealed off and now houses an anvil. The barmaids were very pleasant, and the clientele were a civilised mixed bag of ages. Food is based on pub grub, plus pasta, steaks and pizza nights on Wednesdays, as well as Sunday roasts. Ales on were Purity Ubu, Doombar and Otter, reasonably well kept and in decent condition. Good enough to pop in for a pint or a bite.

It's fortunes have gone up and down over the past few years and changes of landlords - after the recent refit it appears to on the up again - good ales, well kept and a good menu (although I didn't have time to sample it on my flying visit). Definately back above average.

Another refurbed pub, probably overall a good refurb. This is an out of town pub which has to rely on passing trade. As you would expect there is that slightly corporate feel that comes with a modernised interior. Beers were Ringwood Best and Timothy Taylor Landlord, a rarity in the area and in excellent form. Not bad at all.
