A good sized pub in this small village, there is considerable outside seating as well as inside, with both a large patio at the front with some decent seating on it, as well as, from memory, a beer garden at the rear. It seems popular with both locals and diners although I did note that they were running a steak night on our recent Wednesday evening visit.
The main part of the pub is a U-shaped room wrapped around a central bar counter, and the décor is fairly traditional with a mixture of wood strip and carpet on the floor, a few beams on the ceiling and quite a bit of exposed stone walling, although this has been plastered over in places for some reason. Dark wood panelling was on the lower part of the walls, and there were a few pieces of artwork on the walls, including some oil paintings of birds that had been inset in to the woodwork above the bar counter. A stone fire-place stacked full of logs was off to one side and there was a TV screen mounted up in the corner, although fortunately this was not in use on our visit. A restaurant area was off to the rear, and I believe there is also a conservatory, although we did not investigate this. We had planned on eating ourselves, but unfortunately were told that we wouldn’t be able to get any food for an hour and a half, despite a number of empty and unreserved tables.
Beers on tap were Young’s Bitter, Tribute, Butcombe Original and Bath Ale’s Golden Hare, whilst the solitary cider was Thatcher’s Gold. Not a bad pub overall, but I was disappointed that we couldn’t get food despite the available spare tables.
