Will Larter left this review about The Punch Bowl
I've cycled or driven past this pub many times on the A65, and the only reason I stopped this time was because I had planned an earlier stop to the north of Kendal but I had got there too soon for opening at 12 noon. The Punch Bowl, on the other hand, was open. It has the feel of a traditional roadside inn, but with the original rooms opened out and the right hand side of the pub, where there are plenty of tables set for dining, extended into the distance. I presume to left hand side has a kitchen to the rear, whereas the front feels as though it has been the same for half a century, with bench seating arranged in booths, and some high chairs near the pool table. The bar has three hand pumps, with Wainwright and Theakstons Best Bitter joined by what turned out to be a very good Cross Bay Halo, a 3.6% English Pale Ale, or EPA. Is this a style? Well, it's certainly a beer and a very good one on this encounter (NBSS 3.5). On this showing I might have to call again next time I'm on the A65.
