A large former farm complex which includes a caravan and camping site and B&B accommodation. It sits at a major crossroads on the edge of Exmoor so is very popular with tourists, campers and caravaners. It is a popular venue for parties , weddings and othr events. There is a large open area to the front, which contains a children’s play area, various booths and huts for sitting and dining, and even a WW2 pill box. The campsite is in a field behind the pub. There is ample parking in front and behind the pub. Inside, the original part of the building contains a single long bar, informally divided into a drinking area one side and an American diner-style eating area awash with melamine and plastic. It feels more like a motorway service station cafe than a Somerset country pub. The area where we sat had clearly not been cleaned for some time, as there was old food on the floor and the tables were sticky. The other end was dominated by a huge wall-mounted digital display board showing today’s menu, which made it feel like a cheap airport lounge; it wasn’t cheap. There were inglenooks at both ends. Behind the dining area was a games room with a pool table and gaming machines. The barmaid was very helpful, welcoming and pleasant to talk to, and she kindly brought bowls of water for our dogs without our asking. Two ales on, Exmoor Ale and Doombar, both very much over-priced. Also available and over priced were 1664, Madri, Thatcher’s Gold and Haze, Southwest Orchards Cider, Carlsberg, San Miguel, Guinness, Peroni and Shipyard. While it’s easily accessible, it’s not a great pub experience and there are better pubs not far away.
