Tucked away down a narrow lane in the old part of Westbury next to the church, I can’t imagine this gets too much in the way of passing trade, but is well worth making the effort to track down. There is also a “secret” beer garden at the rear, which is not directly accessible from the pub, but up a flight of steps next to the pub. This too is something of a hidden gem and was a very pleasant spot on our recent Saturday afternoon visit.

Internally it consists of one room across the front of the pub, with a smaller snug at the rear. Sanded wooden boards were on the floor, with a plain whitewashed ceiling and dark blue wood panelling on the lower part of the walls, as well as wood cladding on the bar counter. A small brick fireplace with a wood burning stove was off to the right, whilst a TV screen above was showing a Top 40 show from the 1970’s. A few pictures were dotted around the walls, some of sports personalities as well as old black and white photographs of the locale. The snug at the rear was broadly similar in terms of décor, although with distressed wood cladding entirely covering the walls.

The solitary beer on tap was Butcombe Original, although there was a second pump that appeared unused so there may on occasions be others. Ciders meanwhile were well represented with Stan’s Cheddar Valley and a trio from Thatcher’s with their Gold, Haze and Dry.

A cracking pub that remained our local even seven years after moving closer to many more pubs. Wadworth beers (6X, IPS, Horizon) and two guests (usually Butcombe plus one) all in good nick - GBG for ever. A good set of locals can be relied upon to entertain. The pub can get very busy, but always retains a pleasant atmosphere.

Food is at the better end of traditional pub fare with Pie Minister pies, locally-sourced meat, excellent fish. Prices not too high either - we eat here regularly, even though we now live away. Best to book for busy periods if you want to eat.

Look out for the legend that is Bertie the Beer Hound.
