Brick & Tile wasn’t on my list so I’m not sure how I ended up in here, maybe the interesting looking building enticed my ale addled brain. The bar on the rear wall of this single room pub supports three hand pumps, but only a past its best Dancing Duck Brewery Ay Up was available. There was also Standard and premium keg alongside Beavertown Neck Oil. There was some background music and I noted a dartboard, but there was little else going on in here except for the disinterested service.

A corner pub with rear outdoor area, fittingly executed in brick, which appears under the same name on the 1883 OS map. The interior has been battered about a bit: assuming there was once a central entrance, the interior now is irregular with partly knocked through rooms, fakey beams and pillars. A TV showed the Olympics in silence as a bloke played 80s music from a little rear area - all while little lasery lights danced on the floor and walls to entertain myself and a couple of people in the other corner. A few local pictures are on the walls. It is in a student area, but as they are away the clientele consisted of me, a couple of others and DJ Lighty. Service was fine and there were a couple of real ales on: Hobgoblin Gold and Bass, the Bass being OK. For a misery like me, the best visit I think would be an afternoon one - happy I did drop in though.

"Traditional Alehouse" it says outside, but in fact nothing could be further from the truth. It's got a stripped back modern look about it, a remodelling that involves more pillars than walls, and which pays scant regard to the heritage of this fine old building. The beers are all at the lager end of the spectrum, including the sole real ale, the very pale and modern-hopped Pedigree New World. There's loud modern music and a bored young woman behind the bar, and the only feature I could see that would normally be found in an alehouse, apart from the solitary hand pump, was a dart board.
