E TA left this review about Rose & Crown
A high street pub which has had a slightly odd makeover, giving it the look and feel of a 1970s youth club - and that's without commenting on the customers. There is a front bar dominated by a pool table, which makes it difficult to get to the gaming machines. The carpet is cheap, and the wooden chairs and tables look as though they have been recycled from a back street soup kitchen. There is another bar to the rear which is more civilised, where the grown-ups go for drinks and to get away from the - clientele - in the front. Both bars are entered from a sterile corridor which runs the length of the building down one side, making me think this may once have been a coaching inn. The effect is not an aesthetically pleasing one, and there is no feeling of warmth or enticement to enter. Having said all that, the welcome from the barmaid was a cheerful one - she is by far the pub's best asset. How aposite that an anagram of "The Rose and Crown" is "retards, one wench". There was one ale on - Directors, which tasted a bit strange. It's OK to drop in for a quiet pint while passing, but I'm not sure I could make an evening of it.
