Final pub of the day situated adjacent the deceased (and much-missed) Fareham-Gosport railway line, hence the pub’s name which is picked-out in lovely mosaic on the entrance porch floor. Assumed (hoped!) I caught it mid-refurb as the flooring was missing, just a concrete scree under my feet. Green and white colour scheme with an Irish tricolore on the wall. A local’s redoubt, with a pool table and rugby loudly on the tellybox. Two of the three pumps operational, dispensing Woodfordes Wherry and a sensational Parkway Brewery Nine Lives Porter (NBSS 4.5). Think was also proper cider on. Mixed bag, but the quality of the ale means that I’d definitely do the place again if nearby, hopefully with the addition of a proper floor by then…

A back street boozer standing on what was once an important railway junction, now long gone. The single square corner bar contains a pool table, dart board, gaming machines and tv screens, with a carpeted floor. There is also a tiny games room behind which is used only for darts. The current landlady has evicted the vermin which used to plague the pub and introduced real ale to keep them away. There were two ales on draft this week, Crop Circle and Bowman's Wallop, both in excellent condition. They are also holding a beer festival this coming Easter, so the local CAMRA branch ought to have a good look at this pub (if they haven't already) as a possible future GBG candidate. Although appearing scruffy and run-down, this is a good example of how a pub with a bad reputation can be turned around and made to survive today's climate. I will certainly be back next time I'm in the area for its beers, and I would recommend including it on a town crawl.
