Old Boots left this review about The Castle Hotel

In a commanding position opposite the railway station this is a well appointed hotel bar in the sharp end of a wedge shaped building. Under the grey paint there are some nice features on the old counter, the etched windows are good and the sandstone fireplace carved with the nearby Old Bridge and Berwick Castle is neat. The fireplace at the other end appears to be carved with Lindisfarne Castle. A limited choice of beers, two unused handpumps plus a couple of T-Bars with a few lagers, Shipyard and Belhaven Best. A third has the Guinness and cider. Furnished mainly with tables and chairs, it has banquette seating under the end windows and a sofa at one end strategically placed to view the large screen, and it’s beside a dart board.

A pretty little building that’s the first pub you see as you exit the station. I suspect this was a nice place a few years ago, however this wedged shaped place has had a glooping of snot green paint across the bar and the third length wood panelling so the interior felt pretty devoid of character. Two pumps with no discernible ale on; a Maxim pump clip lingered on the bar nearby but I decided I wasn't going to be the only idiot to try and drink it should it exist, so a keg Maltsmiths IPA had to do. A real waste, this could and should be much better.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Castle

We managed to get a quick pint in here before heading to the station. They had two ales on handpump on our visit, Hadrian and Border Secret Kingdom and Tyneside Blonde, both were excellent and at £2.60 a pint. The wedge shaped lounge was very comfortable and would like to spend a bit more time here on a next visit. The interior was traditional in décor and I remarked to the manageress, on how spotlessly clean the pub was.

Will Larter left this review about The Castle

There was no real ale on here at the time of last year's visit, but on my return this spring I caught a glimpse of hand pumps with clips attached when cycling past, so made a point of walking back later to investigate. This is a really nice railway hotel, with a wedge shape to fit the shape of the road turning back towards the station. The light and airy bar benefits from windows on three sides, and the dining room is at the broader end of the building, to the left of the entrance from the main road into town.

The bar has two hand pumps, serving Double Maxim and Hadrian and Borders CTC. Unusual etched glass pictures of local landmarks are hung above the bar counter, adding to the attractions of this comfortable room. Easily missed (I only saw it on my way out) is the stone fireplace with a carved relief depicting Bamborough Castle. Worth a visit.
