Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Oxford Arms

The Oxford Arms is to all intents and purposes closed. The main building is closed for a major refurbishment. Whilst there is supposed to be a drinking space in a barn to the rear, this has very unpredictable opening times. It is published to open Friday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes only. I'd timed my visit to Herefordshire to take advantage of the Friday evenings, but noticed on their Facebook page that they hadn't opened the previous Friday due to staff shortages. I contacted them to see if they would be open on the Friday of my visit and was assured that they would be. However, after finally arriving in Kington, I saw they had sent me another message to say they would now no longer be opening!

The temporary venture is supposed to be called the Open Arms, but maybe it should be instead titled the Closed Arms. Whilst this place is good at communicating (although perhaps not offering very timely communications), you cannot rely on it being open, even if they say it will.

This is a rather scruffy-looking old hotel, quite clearly still loved but much too big for the level of business at the time of my midweek evening visit - perhaps it's busier at the weekend. A couple of hand pumps are on the short side of the bar, visible from the doorway on entry. In the gloomy lighting I was unable to read one of the hand pumps, so went for the Hobsons Town Crier which was identifiably available on the second pump. There was a mixed clientele, with some playing darts and pool. It felt like a village local on a quiet night: friendly, a bit rough around the edges but with a loyal following.

Really olde world's former coaching inn. Lovely pint of Robinson's Flagon. All cruckwork and 60s' carpets. Friendly staff and cat. Very good food!
