One of the most beautiful picture postcard pubs I've stayed at, the listed Crown lies in the tiny hamlet of Alvediston surrounded by stunning countryside. Good food and ale plus the usual ambience of this type of building make it a place well worth taking the time to find. I don't know whether it's true but I'm told Madonna (the singer - not the holy one!) stayed here - all I know is she wasn't still in my room when I arrived!

A fantastic picture-postcard pub, dating from the 15th century. The beautiful thatched roof and outside well are features to admire. The multi-roomed interior is classic low wood beams and general olde worlde ambience, including a large inglenook to sit in. The landlord is extremely welcoming. Ales on were Ringwood Best, Keystone Bedrock, Sixpenny 6d mild and Sixpenny Alvediston in good shape. Stowford Press cider also available. Pub dog, ‘Puzzle’ the basset. Home-made pickled onions very tasty. Tidy rear garden. Factoid: former PM Anthony Eden is buried in a nearby church yard. You should definitely do this one, I didn't want to leave.

Hidden away a couple of miles off the main Salisbury-Shaftesbury Road, The Crown is a small, traditional village pub with loads of charm, excellent beer and great food, and no modern distractions. The landlord is extremely welcoming, and the locals are quite happy to make you feel at home. It's ideal for people who want a quiet pint, or who are enjoying the cycling/walking in the valley and want to stop for a meal or a drink. There are 3 handpumps on, usually with Ringwood plus two guests, all well kept and in first class condition. Well worth making the effort to find.
