Strongers . left this review about City Hotel

The City Hotel has two bars, but the one visible through the front windows to the right of the entrance was closed during a recent Tuesday afternoon visit. I did have a little nose about and noted an island bar with seating around along the rear and right walls, as well as across the front windows. One of the polite staff members directed me to the laminate floored restaurant and bar that is located down some steps at the rear. The rear facing wooden grey painted marble topped serving counter is found to the left and the large restaurant the right. Standard keg was available from the polite barmaids alongside Peroni and Madri. There was some very low background music playing, but no other distractions. Out the back is a decked seating area that overlooks a car park. There were a couple of other customers, but there was no atmosphere, and I did feel like I was drinking at a hotel restaurant bar. I’d maybe have a beer in here it I was staying as a guest, but I wouldn’t revisit if just passing.

This hotel has now been thoroughly modernised and any character removed. My previous review no longer applies.

Weavers Bar has a separate entrance to the right of the hotel, with an A-board on the street to encourage casual drinkers: not very successfully, as it happens. It was a welcome respite on a bitterly cold evening, and the bar has a very smart appearance that extends also to the toilets. I wasn't expecting to find any real ale in a place like this, so it would be unfair to say I was disappointed to be drinking the sadly mis-named Belhaven Best. To be fair the beer wasn't as cold as in the Watering Hole, but nevertheless just as tasteless. I was the only customer on a quiet Sunday evening, and the door was locked almost as soon as I had left the premises just after nine.

The City Hotel was originally built in 1775 and sits right in Dunfermline town centre. The Hotel is part of City Hotels (Dunfermline) Ltd which also run The Pitfirrane Hotel in neighbouring Crossford, and The Caledonia Hotel at the Port of Rosyth. The place has 2 bars and a restaurant, 2 function rooms and banqueting facilities. The pub/hotel would not look out of place in any city centre. All good quality and comfort. There is parking available at the rear of the hotel.
