I don't recall when I was last in Drefach Felindre but I do recall it was to visit the other pub in the village - John y Gwas. My return was specifically to visit the Red Lion which opens at 4pm on weekdays (apart from Monday when it is closed).

I arrived to find just the landlord present. The bar is fairly modern with a dartboard and a pool table, jukebox and games machine. Music was playing from a TV. There is a separate dining room to the right-hand side and a few picnic tables in the car park to the front.

On the bar, there are 3 handpulls. Mantle Cwrw Teifi & Bass were on, with the third handpull unclipped. Ciders were Old Mout Cherries & Berries, Kiwi & Lime & Pineapple Cider, Inch's & Thatcher's Haze. I haven't seen the Old Mout range on draught too many times. So, I gave the Kiwi & Lime a go. The landlord didn't seem too happy with them as he said there was a lot of wastage.

Food wasn't being served during my visit but I did spot some pickled eggs behind the bar.

My hazy recollection of the Tafarn John y Gwas is that it is the better of the village pubs but the Red Lion is not to be dismissed.

What ought to be an imposing 3 storey building has been spoiled by a fire escape and other additions. The interior has been totally modernised with a bright feel and lots of light wood including what appears to be a brand new traditional bar, although the modern floral wallpaper is a bit of a distraction. A pool table and dartboard could be found at one end of the main room, although neither in use. At the other end is a dining room, with a rather unkempt garden area at the back. The food was a bit average but the draught beers were ok, being Bass and the local Mantle Cwrw Teifi. Needs to develop a bit of character and tidy up the rough ends but has potential.
