As frequently touted, England's northernmost thatched pub, in a pretty little estate village. The place has been thoroughly modernised however, with lots of clean light wood and blow-up photo murals round the walls - not unpleasant but lacking atmosphere. It is mainly set out for dining although the side room has a dartboard at the back. Three beers from the nearby Cheviot Brewery were on handpump, in very nice condition. They currently manage the pub on behalf of the estate although this apparently is about to change, which was perhaps reflected in the level of service and slightly disappointing food. Room for improvement.

A surprisingly early opening time for this rural pub at 11am. I would say this was due to its position right next to Etal castle, which does attract many visitors in the summer. The pub had a comprehensive lunch time menu on our visit. There was only one ale on the bar, which was Flying Scotsman from Caledonian. The novelty factor here was the collection of witches hanging over the bar. One of the locals decided to bring one back as a souvenir from a trip to Prague and hence started this trend. The pub has the main lounge and bar in the middle, a small snug on the left and a pool table on the right.
